Electrical Engineer - Substation Engineering
The candidate will provide design engineering and project management of LG&E/KU substation capital construction projects.
Education & Experience Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering discipline, Power Systems course completion preferred
Preferred Qualifications Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems from a business perspective . Excellent interpersonal and team building skills. Effective planning, organizing, and both written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated leadership abilities. Familiarity with or ability to become proficient with Microsoft Office applications, ORACLE Applications, Cascade and Powerbase, AutoCAD, and Light Table
Job Description Develop scope of work and construction cost estimates for distribution substation capital construction projects and prepare Authorizations for Investment Proposals.
Working with the Engineering and Design Computer Graphics team, develop construction and design drawings for substation expansion projects. Drawings can include Single Line, Three Line, DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Plan and Section views, Foundation Layout and Plan, Conduit Plan, Grounding Plan and many others.
Procure and or coordinate procurement of materials and construction contractors •Specify and procure equipment, materials, and outside contract services as required to complete capital projects
Complete power system analysis calculations, fault studies, protective relay and recloser settings, and verify coordination with other protective devices
Provide overall project and construction management of assigned capital projects, ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently, and ensure adherence to safety policies and standards requirements. Update asset databases including Cascade and Powerbase
Manage project budgets to ensure compliance with commitments, and explain variances and discrepancies, complete monthly variance and reforecasting on projects
Maintain and update major equipment and contract service specifications
Maintain and update Distribution Substation Construction and Design Standards
If so assigned, provide leadership and direct supervision for exempt and/or non-exempt employees, including job assignments, performance management, training, development, etc.
Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.
Participates in industry organization activities.
Coordinates and/or directs the activities of engineers, technicians, supervisors and/or others assigned to specific projects or work groups as necessary.
Engineering assignments are broad in nature, and the incumbent will have the latitude of and the responsibility for unreviewed actions or decisions, project management, engineering, and construction of major projects.
Supports various operations and maintenance groups with engineering-based problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
Assists other Engineers with large and/or complex projects, as required.
Assists with the development of goals, objectives, budgets, programs, and procedures.
Demonstrates financial analysis ability.
Maintains a knowledge base of current industry standards and technologies.
Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.
Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as directed by management.
Development of project scope of work. Bidding and procurement of capital equipment such as power transformers, steel packages, distribution switchgear, control houses, and power circuit breakers.
Bidding and ordering miscellaneous materials for construction projects
Coordinate contract and company construction crews
Report on project progress, budget variance, and budget reforecasts as requeste
Verify completion of project within scope of work and recommended design
Review and update construction and protection standards and equipment specification
Support field maintenance personnel in solving non-routine technical and reliability issues, inspect work of contract field crews
Complete safety audits
Support emergency call-in operations and other work as requested by the Group Leader or Manager of Substation Engineering & Design
Work Conditions Routinely works in energized electrical substations. Routine exposures to adverse working conditions including heat, cold, dust, etc. The field work requires frequent walking and climbing. Routine travel throughout the KU/LG&E service area required. Occasional overnight assignments required.
Physical Effort Standing, walking, and some climbing required.
