Being a power plant operator is a serious responsibility. The operator is in charge of the safety of the power plant's crew, as well as the soundness of the equipment and machinery. Chances are, if you don't want to be responsible for all of these things on top of making sure that an entire city is supplied with all the power it needs, then you probably aren't cut out for life as a plant operator. But if you're ready to rise to the challenge of taking on this heavy burden of responsibility, then you should take a closer look at this profession and see if you're qualified to fill this important role.
In order to be a great power plant operator, you must have the proper experience. You should have a degree in engineering or science so that you can properly understand the intricacies of working in a power plant. You'll need to have experience working in a power plant as well, so that you have an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of a power plant and what's necessary to keep it functioning properly, not only in terms of the mechanics of a power plant, but of the other things that contribute to the proper running of a power plant.
It's important for a power plant operator to be familiar with all of the equipment and machinery at the power plant, and to know how to maintain and repair this equipment and machinery. If even something seemingly minor breaks down, it could potentially cause power outages to a lot of people who depend on that power to work and even to live. While it would be impossible for you to go over every inch of a power plant on your own, it would be your responsibility to oversee a team of workers who would be responsible for different parts of the plant and to make sure that they're all doing their jobs.
Being able to supervise a team is about more than just telling them what to do. You have to follow up with them and make sure that they're following protocol. You have to make sure that they're qualified and capable, and that they are up to date on the latest protocols and procedures. You have to keep them in the know, and make sure to keep in the know yourself so that you can give them accurate directions. As the power plant operator, you are the leader, and you must lead by example as well as by direct authority.
A power plant operator bears a heavy burden. You have to make sure that everything is running smoothly and that nothing breaks down. People's lives could be at stake if you fail. And you have to make sure that you're safe and that your team is safe as well as you go about your duties at the plant. By making sure that everything is operating well and that everyone stays safe, you can make sure that everybody can go about business as usual.
