Groundman

Position Summary: Performs a variety of duties related to the electrical underground and/or overhead system, providing support for lineman operating in aerial bucket, on pole, trenches or underground facility environment. 

Education & Experience: : High school diploma (or GED). Must have experience in the use of common hand tools such as rulers, ratchets, crescents, pliers, etc. Experience in underground utilities preferred. 

? Skills & Abilities: Ability to communicate clearly & concisely. PC literate. 

? Driving: Must have and maintain a valid Tennessee Class “A” license with air brake and tanker endorsement. (Must obtain within 6-months of employment) 

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares and pre-assembles for installation by Lineman
  • Digs holes and sets poles and anchors
  • Makes terminations in underground transformers as directed by Foreman or Lineman
  • Installs termination connectors and grounding rods
  • Raises tools and equipment to crewman working overhead using block and tackle
  • Operates heavy machinery involved with digging, setting and tamping poles, pulling overhead and

underground conductors, digging and backfilling trenches or other excavations 

  • Fills and tamps backfill around poles and trenches
  • Connects guy wire to ground anchors
  • Clears bush from utility right-of-way
  • Operates truck-mounted boring equipment
  • Operates bucket-truck up to 50’
  • Installs, repairs, maintains and replaces all components of street lights, security lights, flood lighting, (lamps,

bulbs, ballasts, poles, bases, mast arms and street light fixtures) underground secondary- everything but 

primary, and overhead on de-energized and energized from 110 V - 480 V under the leadership of a 

Journeyman Lineman 

  • Trouble shoots electrical problems and underground wiring under the leadership of a Journeyman Lineman
  • Observes proper traffic control procedures
  • Observes electrical safety procedures
  • Stocks/restocks truck
  • Organizes tools and materials
  • Cleans job sites upon completion of work, cleans tools, equipment and other facilities
  • Operates radio system
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Foreman
  • Subject to 24 hours per day 7 days a week on call status
