Power Plant Operator - Electrical

 

Job Summary 
Provide safe operations, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of production equipment, instruments, and other equipment to provide power and steam to a 24/7 Paper Mill operations. Will also provide electrical skills, including but not limited to, wiring, PLC, DCS, and electrical troubleshooting.

 

This position requires a rotating shift work schedule , including overtime, as needed and approved. Work is conducted in a self-directed team environment where safety and quality come first. This is a Level 2 Position following the Collective Bargaining Agreement with IBEW Local 2129.

 

Primary Duties

 

  • Operate and maintain high pressure gas turbine-generators, heat recovery steam generators, cooling towers, chillers, and associated process equipment to provide power and steam to Paper Mill operations
  • Perform testing and equipment rounds, and make adjustments to process operations to deliver reliable, low-cost utilities
  • Perform routine service, setup, adjustment and repairs of equipment (e.g. instruments, field devices)
  • Perform Predictive & Preventative tasks associated on heavy industrial manufacturing equipment
  • Identify and correct defects in equipment during preventative maintenance and electrical inspections
  • Install and troubleshoot controls’ equipment utilizing PLC and DCS architecture
  • Diagnose and repair electrical power and control systems, AC V/S drives, and DC brushless generator exciters
  • Read and use electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams and circuit diagrams
  • Follow communication protocols (Ethernet, Device net, Control net)
  • Conduct rigging/lifting fundamentals required for large equipment replacements
  • Use hand tools, portable electric tools & maintenance shop equipment
  • Rebuild spare equipment and components
  • Identify, plan, execute electrical maintenance tasks
  • Work within an operations-driven team environment to resolve issues and improve performance
  • Prepare and deliver formal training to individuals and small and large groups
  • Regularly participate (usually daily) in safety leadership efforts (including, but not limited to, Peer-to-Peer Feedback, Risk Assessment Process, and Risk Reduction activities)

 

Travel

 

  • Up to 30% overnight travel during years 2018-2020; some travel (~10%) required thereafter
  • Due to the training requirements for this position, each selected employee will be committed to the role for 24 months from their position hire/start date before being able to post for other positions 

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Journeyman level skills supported by successful completion of a certified electrical training program or apprenticeship in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years electrical and instrumentation experience in an industrial manufacturing setting

 

  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks, work at heights and work within confined spaces
  • Must understand preventive/predictive/proactive maintenance concepts
  • Proven safety record and history of safety leadership (including peer-to-peer feedback, participation in Risk Assessment process, participation in Risk Reduction activities)
  • Has a “Safety-First” mindset before performing any assignment
  • Capable of learning fundamentals of turbine, boiler, and cooling system operations including chemical and thermodynamic principles
  • Prepare, document and deliver formal training to a group
  • Has excellent communication and listening skills, gives and receives feedback on a regular basis
  • Is self-motivated to achieve high quality standards while working in a high performing, self-directed team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 5 years of experience as an E&I Technician OR completion of an approved apprenticeship program or technical associate’s degree, with a minimum of 36 months related industrial experience

 

  • Training in LEAN tools and concepts
  • Experience with high-speed manufacturing and converting equipment
  • Computer skills with SAP, Microsoft Word, Outlook and other Windows applications
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, including self-motivation
  • Experience with Power Generation and/or Boiler Operations
