The Apprentice Lineman is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical power lines. Lineman will perform live line maintenance, construction support, and detailed inspections for transmission lines and structures.  Lineman will construct, inspect, and repair transmission lines from a helicopter platform, helicopter skid, transferring to the structure, short haul method, and wire-walking on both energized and de-energized lines.

-         Responsible for the personal and/or team implementation of “SAFETY AS A VALUE”

-         Select and use a variety of "hot line" tools and makes use of rubber gloves, line hoses, mechanical jumpers, fiber guards, blankets and other protective devices as specified. Works on all voltages as required throughout the system

-         Install, remove, transfer, maintain and/or repair cross arms, pins, insulators, guys, transformer and switch racks and other overhead pole using a variety of hand tools, equipment and power tools.

-         Perform line switching or sectionalizing, as directed

-         Inspect lines, poles and equipment for signs of damage or wear and reports deficiencies

-         Assist in carrying poles, digging holes, piking and guying poles and other such operations involved in the setting or replacing of poles; may erect steel towers

-         Assist in on-the-job training of apprentices and other crew members in maintenance and construction of power lines

-         Perform tasks from helicopter platforms including but not limited to unclipping/clipping OHGW, OPGW, and conductor, OHGW/OPGW/Conductor repair, OHGW/OPGW arm replacement, marker ball installation, bird diverter installation, full tension splices, sleeve repair, patch rod repair ETC.

-         Transfer from helicopter to structure via helicopter platform, helicopter skid, or short haul method to perform various tasks including but not limited to tower numbering, cross arm replacement, insulator replacement, conductor cut in, un-clip/clip-in conductors, lightning arrestor installation ETC.

-         Climb wood, steel, and concrete structures when required.

-         Operation of insulator washing device from helicopter

-         Operation of inspection equipment

-         Operation of computers, software, cameras, binoculars, electric hand power tools, hydraulic power tools, hand tools, gas driven tools, powder actuated tools ETC

-         Drive company vehicles and tool trailers

-         Troubleshoot electrical problems on company and customer equipment

-         Other duties as assigned



-         Successful completion and graduation from a pre-apprenticeship program

-         Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL)

-         First Aid certification

-         Competency in CPR and pole top rescue 

-         OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) training courses

-         10 hour Transmission & Distribution certification and other credentials


-         Tanker Endorsement

-         Hazmat Endorsement

-         Continued education lineman training

-         Previous experience performing line work from a helicopter

-         Knowledge of distribution lines with an understanding of Electrical Utility Construction Specifications, National Electric Code and OSHA Rules and Regulations

-         Knowledge of updated First Aid and CPR

-         Thoroughly familiar with system routes and geography

-         Valid Class A CDL

-         Ability to perform all activities required in the construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution lines

-         Ability to draw and interpret maps, sketches and diagrams

-         Ability to supervise others

-         Ability to teach and mentor others

-         Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications

-         Must be organized and detail oriented

-         Ability to anticipate needs and proactively offer solutions

-         Ability to make sound decisions and work independently



-         Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents

-         Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar

This position may require, or call for the employee to drive company equipment and/or to utilize his/her own personal vehicle for occasional driving on company business.  Therefore, as a condition of employment, if deemed applicable, employees must maintain a valid Driver License and meet all company standards regarding annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) inquiries and status.

Company standards require employees to carry the appropriate level of personal vehicle insurance deemed by the state in which you reside.

Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Drivers adhere to these requirements, in addition to those with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).  Drivers are always responsible to keep their credentials current (med cards, licenses and waivers) and in their possession any time they are in a company vehicle.
