Position Summary: Assists other line personnel by assembling material s and tools in preparation for work. Develops the skills and job knowledge required to b e promoted to Lineman such as: climbing, knowledge of construction standards and safety rules and work pr ocedures while working under close supervision. Pe rforms other duties of groundman and/or equipment operator/truck driver required in the performance of the job. Tasks, Duties, and Relationships: Assembles material, operates and maintains tools an d equipment as required to meet the safety operating needs of the job. Learns to climb poles and work as member of c rew under close supervision and instruction. Assists in the patrol of line and inspection of structures. Learns to r ead and interpret blueprints and other specifications for constructio n of lines and substations. Clears and maintains r ight-of-way by cutting and trimming, and learns proper use of chem icals. Learns to operate equipment used in line construction and maintenance. Learns to care for and maintain tools and equipment. Learns the Cooperative's safety ru les, first aid procedures and proper work practices and is respons ible for operating in accordance with these procedu res. Learns and performs all tasks and duties contained in Truck Dr iver's job descriptions. Learns to perform all tas ks and duties of Lineman while working under close supervision. Mai ntains a Commercial Driver's license and endorsemen ts. Watches and advises linemen of hazards while workin g on energized lines and equipment. Learns to work with hazardous materials, assists in cleanup of oil and chemical spills and participate in the proper dispo sal of contaminated materials. Assists in substation construction and maintenance. Establishes and maintains contact wit h cooperative employees and others necessary in the performance o f the job. Performs other duties as required. Education & Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent certificate and p ossess or obtain a commercial driver’s license within 6 month s of employment. One (1) year of related construct ion experience. Physical and Environmental Requirements: Requires working outside in varying environmental locations from dry and cultivated fields to wooded and diverse areas of undergrowth and in varying wea ther conditions and temperature extremes with extreme ra nges of humidity and dryness. Requires working at night inside or outside in all weather conditions. Requi res lifting, pushing pulling or carrying of weights equal to 50 pounds or more. Requires pushing, pulling and reac hing above the shoulders. Requires kneeling, crawl ing, bending or twisting while lifting arms above shoulders and stooping for extended periods of time, in order to accomplish duties while grasping, pulling or pushing objects o r manipulating tools. Requires walking and/or stan ding for extended periods of time, which includes routine fo ot patrol of transmission lines and facilities. Re quires sitting for extended periods of time while riding in a motor ve hicle. Requires wearing personal safety equipment. Requires manual and detailed hand work using both hands. Al so may require repetitive manual tasks. Requires w orking overtime and traveling at times with short notice. Requires living within a 30 minute response time. Must be able to obtain required driver’s license. Requires hear ing within normal range. Hearing aids are permitte d. Requires vision within normal range. Corrective lens are pe rmitted.
