Environmental Specialist II - CEMS

This position provides data transfer, quality assurance, and reporting support for Continuous Emissions Monitoring systems (CEMS) for Duke Energy's Midwest fleet. 

This position minimizes regulatory compliance risk by analyzing, validating, and reporting CEMS emissions data.  Key responsibilities include emissions data quality assurance and reporting, ensuring the reliable flow of signals to/from the CEMS Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS), programming the DAHS to meet regulatory standards as well as supporting Duke operations, and resolving associated regulatory concerns. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Perform CEMS data review, analysis, and reporting activities

  • Implement and support CEMS QA/QC Programs to comply with air permits and state and federal regulations

  • Maintain knowledge of current environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge of technical aspects of regulatory requirements

  • Collaborate and assist facility craft, environmental staff, engineers,  IT, contactors, and vendors to improve CEMS functionality and resolve regulatory concerns 

  • Support CEMS capital projects, focusing on CEMS DAHS configuration, alarms, and communication with CEMS field devices and facility control rooms

  • Provide onsite support at generating facilities, as needed

  • Support stack testing; evaluate and submit test results (e.g. RATA)

  • Support Midwest region to ensure all emissions monitoring and reporting work assignments, goals, and measures are met

  • Collaborate with all Duke Energy Regions to implement CEMS best practices across Duke's Fleet 

Working Conditions: 

  • Travel as necessary to meet the needs of Midwest Region and other Duke Energy Regions. Position may require up to 20% Travel
  • Work extended hours as necessary to address emergent workload including evenings, weekends, holidays and 24/7 phone availability for emergency calls
  • Work environment includes office and power plant locations with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity
  • Will climb ladders and stairs; work in hard to reach and high locations, and restricted spaces
  • Will at times work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and around energized and operating machinery
  • Company policy, in regard to safe work practices, must be fully understood and constantly practiced as a condition of employment

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or other related field of study plus three (3) years’ directly related work experience or seven (7) years’ directly related work experience in lieu of the degree

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the operation & maintenance of CEMS systems in addition to DAHS and reporting interfaces (e.g. StackVision, CEMLink6, ECMPS) is a plus

  • Demonstrated experience with data logger programming, PLC programming, Digital Control Systems, network hubs & switches, and/or network communication protocols (e.g. MODBUS via TCPIP, serial)

  • Working knowledge of CEMS-applicable federal and state regulatory requirements applicable to electric generating units, such as 40 CFR Part 60, Part 75, and MATS

  • Experience with EPA Test Methods, RATAs, and other stack testing methods typical in the power generation industry

  • Instrumentation, controls, and/or network communications experience in an industrial setting

  • Working knowledge of power plant operations and maintenance

  • Ability to function both within a self-directed work environment and within a high involvement team setting

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each within specified timeframes

  • Must be proficient with computer applications such as MS Word, and Excel and be able to learn third-party software packages such as those used to monitor and report air emissions data

  • Ability to collaborate successfully with diverse groups working toward a common goal or objective

  • Good written and oral communication skills
